Bed Bug Control

As global travel increases so does the spread of bed bugs. Bed bugs are human parasites, their spread is not affected by hygiene or social standing and their impact is felt throughout the hospitality and transportation industries without discrimination.

Bed Bugs:

What do we need to know?

  • Bed bugs can live for between four to six months without a blood meal
  • They prefer to reside in tight cracks and crevices that are near a potential host
  • Female bed bugs lay an average of eight eggs per day and up to 500 in a lifetime
  • Bed bug eggs are approximately 1mm long and a fed adult is up to 6mm long

If even one bed bug remains an infestation can be re-established, therefore all activity must be removed.

Circle of Protection

Due to an increase in global travel since the late 1990’s, bed bugs have become an unavoidable threat to businesses, particularly in the hospitality and transportation sector.

Protect: Inspection

The most effective tool to protect guests and brand reputation is regular inspection.

Canine monitoring offers a fast and accurate method of bed bug inspection.

Dogs use scent to locate bed bugs, smelling both live bed bugs and their eggs without disruption to a room in less than a minute.

Protect: Treatment

Treatment using heat will effectively kill all bedbug life stages, whilst leaving no residues.

“Heat treatments are particularly well suited to the hospitality sector. In hotels, bedbug infestations can be hard to detect. Hotel beds and headboards often have large inaccessible voids, providing the bugs with suitable hiding places that hotel staff and pest managers cannot access to check. Missed infestations result in treatment failures and a recurring bedbug problem. Chemical and steam treatments rely on pest managers identifying where the bugs are to focus treatment. Structural heat treatments allow for large areas of the building to be treated at the same time, reducing the risk that infested rooms are missed or that the bugs move to escape treatment.”   – Industry Expert, Dr Richard Naylor

How does heat treatment work?

We use conductive energy to consistently heat a room to 52°C, which has been scientifically found to provide the most effective control.

  • Site-specific risk-assessments are undertaken prior to treatment.
  • Heat-treatments create minimal disruption to the room so the room can be used quickly post-treatment.
  • Heat is effectively targeted and maintained throughout treatment by on-site Ecolab Service Specialists.
  • Time stamped treatments logs are recorded and are fully auditable.

Protect: Ongoing Monitoring

The continual movement of guests traveling means that a treated area can soon be re-infested.

With nationwide coverage Ecolab’s bed bug monitoring programme is delivered to our unwavering standards and is risk-assessed and targeted to your business need, providing a highly effective and efficient method of early detection.
